Introduction:

Welcome to Day 34 of the ‘Bless the Nation 50 Days of Prayer.’ Today’s devotional comes from Bishop Charles May who has served various parishes in Gauteng since 1989 and in 2015 was consecrated the Bishop of the Highveld Diocese. Bishop May gives an encouraging message in the midst of the difficult time our nation is facing, but reminds us that it is the responsibility of the church to stand for righteousness and justice according to Amos 5:24 in the face of all these happenings.

Devotional by Bishop Charles May

Dear sisters and brothers, the last few months had been difficult and challenging in our country. There has been a lot of pain and great loss of hope and despair for many South Africans.

We as a country are bleeding and left wondering what the future holds for us. This comes as we have experienced the following: – the revelation on the allegations of the state capture, the work done by the South African Council of Churches (SACC) and subsequent report on the unburdening panel, the recent research and report done by the academics on how the state has been captured, the recent marches by various organisations and society calling for the president to step down. The midnight shuffling of the cabinet, the recent downgrade by various grading agencies leading to ailing economy, the SASSA debacle, the events around Eskom and the re-appointment of Mr Brian Molefe, the rapes and gruesome killing of women and children in our country. The question we need to ask ourselves as the Church is what does the church in our community say to those around it who are in pain because of what is happening. We as a church community have taken a thought to understand the pain in our country, that is why the SACC launched the #(hash tag) in South Africa #weprayfor. This coming Sunday we will be celebrating the day of Pentecost as a community of the church. We are empowered by the outpouring of the Spirit to communicate the Good News of Jesus Christ. We are empowered to stand for the truth. We are empowered to be people who don’t live in fear, but people who are empowered so that we can be a voice to those who don’t have the voice. So, we are empowered also during this time of Pentecost to be people of prayer. There is no Christian existence without prayer. So Jesus calls us to share in His work of throwing out and dealing with the evil of looting, of corruption, of all that is totally against the will of God, because the God that we worship is a God of justice. We are called to be the people of justice as God is a God of justice. Amos says “Let justice roll down like water righteousness like a never failing stream.” (Amos 5:24) We are not going to keep quiet as a church.
