Introduction:

Welcome to Day 28 of the ‘Bless the Nation 50 Days of Prayer.’ Laurette Mkati was called as a missionary from Scotland to South Africa in 1984 and has served faithfully in the areas of intercession, spiritual warfare and deliverance in the Eastern Cape area. Laurette , who is an elder in the Community Church in Bisho and on the leadership of SA Prayer Movement for Change, draws a parallel between Israel’s situation in Ezekiel 22 and our current situation in South Africa and therefore urges us to also stand in the gap for our nation.

Devotional by Laurette Mkati:

In the Book of Ezekiel 22 we read the words that were written by the prophet Ezekiel. It is the time in Israel’s history when the city of Jerusalem was under God’s judgement, because of the situation of the people – the things they were doing in that city of Jerusalem and the nation of Israel, because Jerusalem is the capital city. God began to anumerate to Ezekiel all the things that He saw in the city. He saw bloodshed, He saw idolitary, He saw sexual sin, He saw disorder in families, He saw corruption amongst the princes, which was government. He saw even in the church: amongst the prophets, there were false prophets, prophesying what God was not saying and priests that were not faithful to God. At the end of all that He speaks these words and He says. This is God speaking “So I sought for a man among them who would make a wall, and stand in the gap before Me on behalf of the land, that I should not destroy it; but I found no one. Therefore I have poured out My indignation on them; I have consumed them with the fire of My wrath; and I have recompensed their deeds on their own heads,” says the Lord God.

God does not desire to pour out wrath on our nation, South Africa. But if we are honest, the report card of South Africa is just the same as the report card that I have just read on the city of Jerusalem. All of those things. They are abounding in our nation and although we stand and we plead with God, we maybe may have a day of repentance, we find tomorrow morning the same things continue. So what is God looking for in our nation at this time? He is looking for those who will stand in the gap. Now in the time of Ezekiel there were only a few people who were priests, but in the New testament we are in a different time. In Christ Jesus every one of us has become a priest unto God. We are a Royal priesthood and God desires us to take that place in the gap and to stand before Him and plead for this nation. Plead for God’s plan and purpose, plead with Him for His mercy, the mercy that came through the blood of Jesus Christ. The mercy and grace that are freely available to us ,if we will approach that throne of grace. So today I want to ask you to take on that garment of intercession. Our master, Jesus Himself, His main task today is He is an intercessor. He is interceding for us. He’s finished defeating the enemy, He finished paying the price for our sins and He’s standing there and He wants us, who are following Him, to join together with Him. Remember He has asked the Father for South Africa, now He just needs to hear that same thing coming from us, who are in the land of South Africa. Let us pray. Father today we want to stand together as sons and daughters of the living God in South Africa and stand before You and plead for mercy. Lord, we cannot say that we are not wrong, we are doing many things before You, but we ask You, Father, for Your mercy. We ask You to pour Your spirit of grace and to grant us repentance as the peoples of South Africa that we would turn from our wicked ways, that we would not offend You, that we would not grieve You any longer. This we are asking Father that Your plan, Your purpose may be fulfilled for this great nation, South Africa. In Jesus name. Amen

Daily Prayer Guide:

Pronounce the blessings of Numbers 6:24-26, Matthew 5:2-12 and Ephesians 1:3-4 over South Africa.

“And whenever you stand praying, if you have anything against anyone, forgive him, that your Father in heaven may also forgive you your trespasses. But if you do not forgive, neither will your Father in heaven forgive your trespasses.” (Mark 11:25-26)

Father God, today we pray for the healing of our nation. We ask for special grace to deal with the historic sins of South Africa. Help us to confess and repent of the injustices of the past and present and to forgive and let go of the pain of the past and present. We pray for wisdom and willingness to work towards reconciliation and restoration. We stand before the throne of grace and ask for your mercy and grace in our time of need. Please heal our hearts and our land. Lead us in paths of righteousness to the honour and glory of your Name!
