Introduction:

Welcome to Day 10 of the ‘Bless the Nation 50 Days of Prayer.’ As we continue to focus our prayer on government and the judicial system, we are honoured that Rev Kenneth Meshoe, Pastor of Hope of Glory Tabernacle and longstanding politician has shared a powerful devotional with us where he uses the example of Elijah to teach us that we need to take on idolatry and then by perseverance in prayer we will see God’s answer.

Devotional by Reverend Kenneth Meshoe:

Many South Africans are concerned about the state of our nation and as a result prayer meetings are called throughout the country. On the 22nd of April this year, Angus Buchan, managed to speak to 1 million Christians who met in Bloemfontein to pray for South Africa. Now there are a number of people in the Scriptures who stood forth when they were challenged and I want us to see what Elijah did when Israel was experiencing drought and the nation was in trouble. I want us to go to 1 Kings 18:41-45

And Elijah said to Ahab, “Go, eat and drink, for there is the sound of a heavy rain.” (42) So Ahab went off to eat and drink, but Elijah climbed to the top of Carmel, bent down to the ground and put his face between his knees. (43) “Go and look toward the sea,” he told his servant. And he went up and looked. “There is nothing there,” he said. Seven times Elijah said, “Go back.” (44) The seventh time the servant reported, “A cloud as small as a man’s hand is rising from the sea.” So Elijah said, “Go and tell Ahab, ‘Hitch up your chariot and go down before the rain stops you.'” (45) Meanwhile, the sky grew black with clouds, the wind rose, a heavy rain came on and Ahab rode off to Jezreel.

Now before this heavy rain, we see Elijah challenging the problem in the nation. What was the problem? It was idolatry! Many people do not realise that politicians are involved in some kind of witchcraft or idolatry because they know that they need some powers to get them to do the job. If it is not the power of God, the resurrected Christ, it will be the power of the evil one or the powers of darkness. So what did Elijah do? He firstly challenged idolatry – the nation had to move away from idolatry – and after challenging idolatry, the man of God went to pray. When he was on the mountain of Carmel, what did he do? He knelt down and he put his face between his knees, hiding his face, and then he was also showing that we need to come with humility before God. But then when he was on his knees and expecting God to answer his prayer, he asked his servant, go and look toward the see. What did the servant say? He said, “I see nothing.” He later said to him, “Go back seven times,” and on the seventh time, Elijah said, “It’s happening,” when he heard there was a cloud as small as a man’s hand.

So, brothers and sisters, we need to pray in unity, we need to confront idolatry that politicians are leading the nation into, and we need to pray expecting God to do a miracle. If we are getting the news and nothing is happening, we must persevere, persevere, persevere until it rains. There is a sound of an abundance of rain that is on the way. Let’s keep on praying, persevering when we hear the bad news, until showers of blessing come to South Africa.
