Introduction:

Welcome to Day 31 of the ‘Bless the Nation 50 Days of Prayer.’ As we continue with the focus on Media we are blessed to have Pastor Kevin Davis from Faith Broadcasting Network (FBN) share a devotional with us today. Kevin, who is the lead Pastor at River Church East London and the host of “Faith that Counts” on FBN, stirs us with the ‘Why’ of prayer and then uses James 3 to illustrate the powerful role that Media plays in our society today.

Devotional by Pastor Kevin Davis:

I’m Pastor Kevin Davis, and I’m the lead Pastor of River Church in East London. I’m also the host of ‘Faith that Counts.’ Today I want to speak to you about prayer. Prayer is an opportunity for us to spend time with God. In John 15:15 “No longer do I call you servants, for the servant does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends…” Isn’t it amazing to know that Jesus doesn’t just look at us and say, ‘You are my servants,’ no, He says, ‘you are my friend.’ This is why we can enter in and speak to our Father who is in Heaven through Jesus Christ, who is the door, and knowing that we are coming to Him not as servants, but as friends – not only as friends, but as sons and daughters of the most High.

Why is prayer important?

  • Talking with God develops a deeper relationship with God!
  • We have not, because we ask not!
  • The persistent prayers of the righteous availeth much!

Haven’t we seen the Body of Christ coming together over the last few weeks and days and months, and how we have lifted up our face to God, and have lifted up our prayers to God, and I truly believe that this the hour for us to pray like we have ever prayed before.

But today I want to speak from the perspective of media and also to speak into the mountain of media. I want to share a Scripture from James 3:5-11

Jas 3:5-11 So also the tongue is a small part of the body, and yet it boasts of great things. See how great a forest is set aflame by such a small fire! (6) And the tongue is a fire, the very world of iniquity; the tongue is set among our members as that which defiles the entire body, and sets on fire the course of our life, and is set on fire by hell. (7) For every species of beasts and birds, of reptiles and creatures of the sea, is tamed and has been tamed by the human race. (8) But no one can tame the tongue; it is a restless evil and full of deadly poison. (9) With it we bless our Lord and Father, and with it we curse men, who have been made in the likeness of God; (10) from the same mouth come both blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not to be this way. (11) Does a fountain send out from the same opening both fresh and bitter water?

So the area of media is one of the seven areas of society, a small area of society, but it boasts of great things. What is incredible about this portion of Scripture is that, yes it talks about the tongue, we from the perspective of media understand that with social media today, whatever we post on social media today, can go what is called, ‘viral,’ and we have seen the effects of viral posts in the past. We should never underestimate what we post on social media. From v7 we see that all other beasts and animals can be tamed and have been tamed, but this particular area, and I believe it is the area of media, is a very important area of society and God is saying to us in this hour that it is exceptionally important that we speak the truth, that we speak the truth in love, that we are coming from a Christian perspective utilizing the power of media, but also saying there is a word of caution that media can be used for such great evil. From v10 it is incredible that media in itself is not evil, it is what it is used for, what it is applied for, determines whether it is evil or whether it is good.

Deuteronomy 30:19 says, “I call heaven and earth to witness against you today, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and curse. Therefore choose life.”

I pray today that if you are in the area of media, if you have a social media account, use it for the advancing of the Kingdom of God.

So let us pray: Father, we come to You right now in the precious name of Your son Jesus Christ. Father, today from the media perspective, we are speaking to the mountain of media in society, and Father we thank you that we will see that the media will report the truth and it is Your truth that will set this nation free. Father, we thank You that as we bless the nation of South Africa and bless the continent of Africa, I thank You that true media reporters will stand up and arise in this hour and will report the good news. Father, I pray that the media will be used as a tool, as an instrument to advance Your Kingdom on earth in Jesus name, Amen!

Daily Prayer Guide:

In the Name of Jesus Christ, we bless the journalists in our nation who report on the news via TV, Radio, newspapers and magazines. May they publish and broadcast Truth. May they realise their accountability before God, and their responsibility to guide the nation to know the Truth. We pray that all negative words will be removed from their mouths and words, and that even the TV, Radio and newspapers in our nation will begin to bless people and honour God.

PRAYER-WALK or DRIVE: Your local TV or Radio station, newspaper offices. Write this blessing on an email and send it to your local newspaper, or phone your local Radio station and pronounce this blessing over the air: “The LORD bless you and keep you; The LORD make His face shine upon you, And be gracious to you; The LORD lift up His countenance upon you, And give you peace.” Numbers 6:24-26

Thank you for joining us today in prayer. Grace and peace to you! Have a wonderful and blessed day.
